So many giraffes in the mall today, not enough Spots to herd them all, said the facial recognition software.

  • The Onion: Filipino version 💰💰💰

    January 17th, 2023

“In the Philippines, the humble onion has been dubbed the country’s new gold. One kilogram, a little over 2 pounds, is selling for almost $11. The global average is around a dollar 50. NPR’s Julie McCarthy has been talking to Filipinos about how this daily staple has reached such dizzying heights.”

  • ChatGPT and Kavadias

    January 12th, 2023

Came across a mention of Kavadia’s poem, Mal du départ on Twitter.

    — Aspa Theochari (@Semiramide35) January 11, 2023

I was tempted to search for an English translation of the poem to share here but then I wanted to see how ChatGPT would perform and started a chat, you’ll find below the fold.

The exchange was interesting and it would be nice to see if somebody else ask it to make the same translation if it will get the corrected version! If you have a few minutes to share please go for a test and be kind enough to report your experience here. Thanks.

  • ‘Disruptive’ science has declined 🤔

    January 9th, 2023

“The proportion of papers that shake up a field has plummeted over the last 50 years. Analysis of citation data from 45 million manuscripts published between 1945 and 2010 showed that, compared with the mid-twentieth century, research done in the 2000s was much more likely to build on previous work than to send the field in a new direction. Reasons for the decline probably include a shift in how science is done — among larger teams and in a more competitive environment — rather than a change in research quality.” More and more.
